The Chef
Have you ever cooked something that was burnt on the outside but raw in the middle? Have you ever grilled meat that was too rare or too well done? Has a pot ever boiled over? Has a cake ever stuck to a pan? Have you ever made food that was too greasy, too spicy, or too salty?
Cooking has its challenges! Now imagine cooking with your eyes closed. Imagine that additional challenge. That is what cooking is like for Laura Martinez. She is a blind chef.
When Laura was one year old, she was diagnosed with cancerous tumors in both her eyes. Doctors succeeded in curing the cancer with drugs and radiation, but they couldn’t save Laura’s sight.
Incredibly, for most of her childhood, Laura didn’t know that she was blind. Born in Mexico, she grew up in a house surrounded by big trees that she climbed with her cousins. Her family and friends always treated her normally, and she had no reason to think that she was disabled in any way. When she was nine years old, her family moved to the United States. It wasn’t until the summer before middle school that her family told her that she was blind. Until then, she had assumed that everyone experienced the world the way she did through sound, touch, smell, and taste. She was shocked to learn that there was a fifth sense-sight.
Laura was a good learner, and she did well in middle school and high school. After she graduated from high school, she left home to go to college. She planned to major in psychology and become a psychologist because she knew there were blind psychologists. But she dropped out of college after the first year. She didn’t leave because of experiences she had in the college’s classrooms. She left because of experiences she had in the college’s cafeteria.
Every time Laura walked into the cafeteria, she noticed the smells first. She couldn’t help but compare them to the smells in her mother’s kitchen back home. She remembered especially the smell of mole, a Mexican sauce made with chili peppers, black pepper, cinnamon, and cumin. When her mother ground the spices for mole, Laura thought the kitchen smelled awesome, so different from the cafeteria, which she thought smelled weird. She thought, too, about the fresh ingredients her mother used in her cooking. She suspected that the ingredients in the cafeteria food didn’t come fresh from gardens, markets, or farms. They came from bottles, cans, and boxes.
Sitting in the cafeteria, trying to eat meals she hated, Laura realized that food, not psychology, was her passion. She didn’t want to be a psychologist. She wanted to be a chef.
Fortunately for Laura, there was a great culinary school, Le Cordon Bleu, in Chicago, just a few hours from her parents’ home. Unfortunately for Laura, the school was not interested in having her as a student. She wondered if it was because she was blind.
Determined to get into the school, she made an appointment to talk to someone in the president’s office. The man she talked to was sympathetic. «My mother is blind, too,» he told Laura, «but I don’t think she’s capable of doing something like cooking at Le Cordon Bleu.» Laura responded, «How do you know? Give me a chance. And if I’m not able to succeed here, I’ll pick up my things and leave—you won’t even have to kick me out.» Laura was admitted to Le Cordon Bleu.
In her last year of culinary school, Laura had some extraordinary luck. A famous chef — the owner of one of Chicago’s top restaurants — stopped by for a visit. He paused in his tour of the kitchen to watch Laura. She was cooking by smell, taste, and touch, even touching simmering liquids to make sure the temperature was right. He tasted a piece of chicken Laura had cooked and then said, «You’re going to work for me, right?»
«That would be an honor,» Laura replied. After she graduated from culinary school, Laura started working at the restaurant. It was her dream job. «We were like family,» she remembers. «No one ever said, ‘You can’t do this because you can’t see».
For three years, she prepped, cleaned, chopped, and cooked alongside Chicago’s best chefs. She learned new techniques. Customers frequently praised her dishes. Many returned, requesting meals she had prepared and complimenting her on the exceptional quality of the food.

A Sixth Sense
Because of a flat tyre, Sue Hendrickson found the bones that made her famous. Sue Hendrickson was with a small group of fossil hunters in South Dakota. They had been digging for dinosaur bones all summer, and the dig had been productive. But now it was time to pack up camp and head home. Then, two days before they planned on leaving, the team found one of the tyres on their truck flat and the spare tyre low on air. Sue’s colleagues headed to a repair station in town, and she stayed behind to continue packing. As she worked, she kept thinking about a small cliff she had seen while exploring nearby ranchland earlier that summer. Her intuition had told her to take a closer look at the cliff, but she hadn’t found time to do it. This was her last chance.
Sue and her dog, a golden retriever named Gypsy, took an eight-mile (13 kilometers) walk to the cliff. Sue started looking around its base, and within minutes she spotted some pieces of bone. «Because the bone pieces seemed to have fallen from above, I looked up,» Sue says. «About eight feet (2.5 meters) up the cliff face, three vertebrae were sticking out of the dirt. They were huge; each was the size of a dinner plate. By their shape, I knew the bones had come from a meat-eating dinosaur. And by their size, I knew it could only be a Tyrannosaurus rex — the rarest of all dinosaurs. I started to cry — I was very emotional.»
For the next three weeks, the team worked 14-hour days digging out the dinosaur skeleton, which they named «Sue» in honour of its discoverer. «Sue» turned out to be the most complete Tyrannosaurus skeleton ever found and the most valuable. After a long court battle, it was ultimately sold at auction for over 8 million.
Scientists were not surprised when they learned that Sue Hendrickson had discovered the 67-million-year-old bones. She is famous in the scientific world for having a sixth sense — an almost supernatural ability to find amazing things. She has discovered precious 23-million-year-old butterflies, sunken ships holding Ming Dynasty vases, Napoleon’s sunken warships, and Cleopatra’s palace, which was submerged in water near Egypt. She has found treasure chests of gold.
Even as a child, Sue had a talent for finding things. «I was always walking with my head down,» she says. «I’d go up and down the streets near my house, looking for treasure. I even went through garbage cans looking for stuff.»
Sue was very bright, but she quit high school when she was 17 to see what was beyond the limits of her small hometown. She travelled around the United States for years, supporting herself with whatever work she could find. In Maine, she got a job diving for lobsters, and she discovered she was good at finding them. «I could think like a lobster,» she says. In Florida, she found work diving with two men who collected tropical fish professionally. From diving for lobsters and tropical fish, she went to diving for sunken ships.
In the mid-1970s, some friends invited her to go on a day trip to visit an amber mine in the mountains. She decided to go. «A miner showed me an insect preserved in amber,» she recalls. «I was fascinated. It looked like it had just been put in the amber, yet it was 23 million years old. That was my introduction to fossils.»
Amber, which is often used to make jewellery, is tree sap that hardened millions of years ago. Sometimes the sap covered insects when it hardened and preserved them perfectly. The trapped insects are highly valued by scientists, museums, and private collectors. Sue Hendrickson became one of the world’s leading suppliers of insects encased in amber. She learned how to tell rare from common insects and travelled often to the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Just as she had been good at finding lobsters and tropical fish, Sue was good at finding rare insects in the amber. Her most important discoveries were three perfect 23-million-year-old butterflies — half of the world’s total collection.
The scientists Sue met through the amber trade recognized that she had a sixth sense for finding things, and they encouraged her to join them on digs for dinosaur bones. She spent the next six summers looking for dinosaur bones in the American West, and in 1990, she discovered «Sue.»

If You Have Time
Natalie was packing her suitcases. She was 20 years old, and she was both nervous and excited. The next day she was travelling to Paris to study. She was almost finished packing when her father walked into the room. He held two small black-and-white photos in his hand.
«When I was your age, I travelled, too,» he said in Armenian, his native language. «I came to the US. On the way, I stopped in Syria at my cousin’s family for a few weeks. She and her husband had four children — a son and three daughters. They’re the family in these photos. I heard from a relative that the daughters might be living in Paris now. I know you’ll be busy in Paris. But I hope you’ll have time to look for these girls. I’d like to know how they are. And I’d like them to meet you.»
Mr. Garibian showed Natalie the names written on the back. «The girls are probably married and have different names,» he continued. «Maybe they don’t even live in Paris. Still, I hope you have time to look for them.»
Natalie took the photos from her father and sighed. «If I have time, Papa,» Natalie answered in Armenian.
Natalie knew that she would have to study hard in Paris. She wanted to travel a little, too. How would she find time to look for the girls? She didn’t know what their names were, or where they lived. Looking for them would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Natalie put the photos at the bottom of her suitcase. She did not intend to spend her semester in Paris looking for the little girls — grown women now — who had met her father thirty years ago.
When Natalie arrived in Paris, she immediately got down to business. During the week, she went to classes, and on long weekends she took train trips throughout Europe. The summer and autumn passed. The days got shorter, darker, and colder. Natalie felt homesick. She missed her family. She remembered seeing a small stone Armenian church in Paris. She decided to go there for a church service, just to hear Armenian spoken again.
When Natalie arrived at the church, she was surprised to see that it was crowded. She found a chair and sat down. A few minutes later, she saw a woman about 70 years old walking up and down the aisle on the other side of the church, looking for an empty chair. The woman was bent over and seemed to have trouble walking. Several people offered her their seats, but she shook her head and kept walking in Natalie’s direction. A few minutes later, she was standing next to Natalie.
Natalie stood up and, in Armenian, offered the woman her seat. The woman sat down. Natalie looked around; the only seat left was at the end of the row, against the stone wall, so Natalie sat down there. All through the service, the woman kept staring at her. When the service ended, the woman asked her in Armenian, «You’re not from here, are you?»
Natalie was dismayed. She had lived in the United States her whole life, but she had always spoken Armenian with her parents. She wondered if she spoke Armenian with an American accent. «No, I’m not from here,» Natalie answered. «How did you know?» «I’m not from here, either,» the woman answered. «I’m visiting my daughters. But I’ve noticed that the young Armenians, the ones who grow up here, don’t speak Armenian. They all speak French. You speak Armenian — good Armenian so I knew you weren’t from here. Where are you from?» «I’m from the United States,» Natalie answered. «Ah, I have relatives in the United States,» the woman said. She began to say their names: «Sarkis, Dikran, Ara…» «Ara?» Natalie asked. Ara was Natalie’s father’s name. «I saw Ara thirty years ago, in Syria,» the woman answered. «He stayed with my family on his way to the United States. Such a nice young man.»
Natalie began to cry. «That’s my father,» she said. The woman raised her hands and said: «God’s work. I’ve been looking for your father for thirty years. I knew you were something special. I knew it in your face.»
Natalie had wanted to hear Armenian because she missed her family. She thought they were all thousands of miles away. Not all of them were far away. One of them was sitting near her, in a small stone church in Paris.

Hadrian’s Wall
Hadrian’s Wall stretches 117 kilometres across northern England, from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. Built by the Romans in the 2nd century CE, it marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain. The wall was not only a defensive barrier but also a controlled border, with gates, forts, and watchtowers where soldiers checked people and goods. Today, visitors can walk along long sections of the wall, explore reconstructed forts such as Housesteads and Vindolanda, and visit museums displaying Roman artefacts. The surrounding landscape, with its rolling hills and remote farms, helps visitors imagine life on the edge of an empire. Hadrian’s Wall is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular route for hikers. It shows how the Romans organised and defended their territories, and how local communities lived under Roman rule for centuries.
Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral, in the south-east of England, is one of the most important Christian sites in Britain. Founded in the 6th century, it became the headquarters of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the senior bishop of the Church of England. The cathedral is famous for its Gothic architecture, including tall arches, stained-glass windows, and intricate stone carvings. In 1170, Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered inside the cathedral, turning it into a major place of pilgrimage. Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales describes pilgrims travelling there. Today, the cathedral remains a centre of worship and tourism. It has hosted royal weddings, coronations of kings, and state funerals. Canterbury Cathedral symbolises both religious devotion and the complex relationship between church and monarchy in English history.
Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court Palace, on the outskirts of London, was originally built for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in the 1520s. When Wolsey fell from power, King Henry VIII took the palace and expanded it into a grand royal residence. The building combines Tudor brickwork with later Baroque additions, creating a striking mix of architectural styles. Visitors can walk through the State Apartments, the Great Hall, and Henry VIII’s kitchens, which give a vivid picture of court life. The palace is also famous for its maze, gardens, and the historic tennis court, one of the oldest in the world. Hampton Court has been home to several monarchs and has witnessed dramatic events, including the birth of Edward VI and the imprisonment of courtiers. Today, it is open to the public and offers a glimpse into the luxury, politics, and scandals of the Tudor and Stuart courts.
York Minster
York Minster, located in the city of York in northern England, is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. Construction began in the 13th century and continued for over 250 years, resulting in a building full of pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and elaborate stone decorations. The cathedral’s stained-glass windows, especially the Great East Window, are among the finest in the world. York Minster has survived fires, storms, and even a lightning strike, each time being carefully restored. It has been the site of royal weddings, christenings, and important church ceremonies. Climbing the central tower offers panoramic views over the medieval city and its narrow streets. The Minster is not only a place of worship but also a repository of art, music, and history. It reflects the wealth and ambition of medieval York and continues to play a central role in the life of the city.
Greenwich and the Royal Observatory
Greenwich, in south-east London, is famous for its maritime history and the Royal Observatory. Founded in 1675 by King Charles II, the observatory was created to improve navigation by studying the stars and developing accurate timekeeping. The Prime Meridian, the line of 0° longitude, passes through the observatory, dividing the Earth into eastern and western hemispheres. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), based on this meridian, became the world’s standard for time. Visitors can stand on the Prime Meridian line, explore historic telescopes, and learn about famous astronomers such as John Flamsteed and Edmond Halley. The area also includes the Cutty Sark, a preserved 19th-century tea clipper, and the National Maritime Museum. Greenwich shows how Britain’s naval power, science, and trade were connected, and why this small part of London became a global reference point for time and navigation.

«Pride and Prejudice» by Jane Austen
«Pride and Prejudice,» published in 1813, is one of the most popular novels in English literature. It tells the story of the Bennet family, focusing on Elizabeth Bennet and her complicated relationship with the wealthy Mr Darcy. The book explores themes such as love, social class, and the danger of judging people too quickly. Austen’s style is witty and ironic, and she carefully shows the differences between appearance and reality. Many readers enjoy the sharp dialogue and the way characters gradually change their opinions of each other. Although the novel is set in the early nineteenth century, its exploration of family pressures and romantic misunderstandings still feels modern. «Pride and Prejudice» has inspired countless adaptations for film and television and continues to be studied and enjoyed around the world.
«1984» by George Orwell
«1984,» published in 1949, is a dystopian novel that imagines a future society controlled by a totalitarian government. The main character, Winston Smith, lives under constant surveillance and is forced to accept the official version of reality, even when he knows it is false. The ruling Party uses propaganda, fear, and strict control of language to keep power. Orwell introduces ideas such as «Big Brother,» who is always watching, and «Newspeak,» a simplified language designed to limit free thought. The story shows how dangerous it can be when a government has too much control over information and people’s private lives. Although «1984» was written more than seventy years ago, it is frequently mentioned in discussions about privacy, censorship, and political power. The book has had a strong influence on modern culture and remains a powerful warning about the loss of freedom.
«To Kill a Mockingbird» by Harper Lee
«To Kill a Mockingbird,» published in 1960, is set in a small town in the American South during the 1930s. The story is told by a young girl called Scout Finch, whose father, Atticus, is a lawyer. When Atticus defends a Black man wrongly accused of a crime, Scout and her brother Jem witness the racism and injustice in their community. The novel deals with serious themes such as prejudice, courage, and moral responsibility, but it also includes warm and humorous moments from Scout’s childhood. Harper Lee uses simple, clear language that makes difficult topics easier to understand. The character of Atticus Finch is often seen as a model of integrity and fairness. «To Kill a Mockingbird» has won major awards, is widely taught in schools, and continues to spark discussion about equality and human rights.
«The Great Gatsby» by F. Scott Fitzgerald
«The Great Gatsby,» published in 1925, is set in the United States during the «Roaring Twenties,» a period of economic growth and social change. The narrator, Nick Carraway, moves to Long Island and becomes fascinated by his mysterious neighbour, Jay Gatsby, who throws extravagant parties. Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan and hopes to win her back, believing that he can repeat the past. The novel looks at themes such as the American Dream, wealth, and the emptiness behind luxury. Fitzgerald’s writing style is lyrical and rich with symbolism, using images like the green light across the bay and the eyes on a billboard to suggest deeper meanings. Although «The Great Gatsby» was not a big success when it first appeared, it later became recognised as a classic. Today, it is widely studied for its portrait of ambition, illusion, and disappointment.
«Jane Eyre» by Charlotte Brontë
«Jane Eyre,» first published in 1847, is the story of an orphaned girl who struggles to find independence and love in a strict Victorian society. After a difficult childhood at a harsh school, Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the mysterious Mr Rochester. As their relationship develops, Jane discovers a dark secret hidden in the house, forcing her to make painful choices. The novel explores themes such as social class, gender roles, and moral integrity, and it presents a strong female character who insists on respecting herself and others. Brontë combines elements of romance, mystery, and social criticism, using expressive, emotional language. «Jane Eyre» has remained popular with readers and in 2003 was ranked as the tenth best-loved book by the BBC.

Ada Lovelace
Ada Lovelace, born Augusta Ada Byron in London in 1815, is often described as the first computer programmer. The daughter of the poet Lord Byron, she had a strong interest in mathematics and science from an early age. In the 1830s, Ada met Charles Babbage and became fascinated by his plans for the Analytical Engine, a mechanical calculating machine. Babbage asked her to translate a scientific article about the engine from French into English. While doing this, she added her own detailed notes, which were actually longer than the original article. In these notes, she explained how the machine could be programmed to perform different tasks and even suggested that it might one day be used to work with symbols, such as musical notes, not just numbers. She also wrote a step-by-step description of how the Analytical Engine could calculate a complex mathematical sequence, which many historians now regard as the first computer program. Although the machine was never built in her lifetime, Ada Lovelace’s ideas showed a remarkable understanding of the potential of computing long before electronic computers existed.
James Dyson
James Dyson, born in 1947 in Norfolk, is a British inventor and entrepreneur best known for transforming everyday household technology. After studying design in London, he became interested in combining engineering with industrial design to solve practical problems. In the 1970s, Dyson worked on various projects, including a new type of boat called the Sea Truck, before turning his attention to vacuum cleaners. He was frustrated that traditional vacuum cleaners quickly lost suction because their bags became blocked with dust. Inspired by large industrial machines that removed particles using cyclones, he spent years building and testing thousands of prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner. The final design used centrifugal force to separate dust from the air, keeping suction strong. Despite many rejections from established companies, Dyson eventually launched his own products, which became extremely successful. He has since developed bladeless fans, hand dryers, and other devices, and set up the James Dyson Foundation to encourage young people to study engineering.
Rosalind Franklin
Rosalind Franklin, born in London in 1920, was a British scientist whose work was crucial to understanding the structure of DNA. After studying chemistry at Cambridge, she became an expert in X-ray crystallography, a technique used to study the arrangement of atoms in crystals. In the early 1950s, Franklin worked at King’s College London, taking detailed X-ray photographs of DNA fibres. One of these images, known as Photo 51, showed a clear pattern that suggested DNA had a spiral structure. Her measurements helped other researchers, including James Watson and Francis Crick, to build their famous model of DNA. Although she did not receive the same level of recognition during her lifetime, historians now see Franklin as a central figure in the discovery of DNA’s structure and in the development of molecular biology. She later studied viruses at Birkbeck College before her early death from cancer in 1958.
Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage, born in London in 1791, was a mathematician, engineer, and inventor who is often called a «father of the computer.» In the nineteenth century, calculations for science, navigation, and finance were usually done by hand and were often full of errors. Babbage wanted to design machines that could carry out complex calculations automatically and accurately. His first major project, the Difference Engine, was intended to produce mathematical tables without human mistakes. Later, he developed plans for the Analytical Engine, a much more advanced machine that could be programmed to perform a variety of operations. This design included features similar to those of modern computers, such as a memory unit and a processor. Unfortunately, the technology of his time and a lack of consistent funding meant that his machines were never fully completed. However, his ideas influenced later computer pioneers, and working models built in the twentieth century showed that his designs were sound. Today, Babbage is remembered as a visionary who imagined programmable computing long before it became reality.
Frank Whittle
Frank Whittle, born in Coventry in 1907, was a British aviation engineer and pilot who played a key role in inventing the jet engine. The son of a mechanic, he developed an early interest in machinery and aircraft. As a teenager he joined the Royal Air Force and trained both as an aircraft fitter and later as a pilot. While studying at the RAF College at Cranwell, Whittle wrote a thesis in which he imagined future aircraft flying much faster and higher than existing planes. He realised that traditional engines would not be suitable for such speeds and began to consider using gas turbines to produce jet propulsion. In 1930, he patented a design for a turbojet engine, but at first his idea was seen as impractical and received little official support. Eventually, money was found and a company called Power Jets Limited was created to develop his engines. In 1941, Britain’s first jet aircraft, the Gloster E.28/39, made its maiden flight using a Whittle engine, proving that his concept worked. Although other countries later developed their own jet engines, Whittle’s work helped launch the jet age and revolutionised both military and commercial aviation.
