«Pride and Prejudice» by Jane Austen
«Pride and Prejudice,» published in 1813, is one of the most popular novels in English literature. It tells the story of the Bennet family, focusing on Elizabeth Bennet and her complicated relationship with the wealthy Mr Darcy. The book explores themes such as love, social class, and the danger of judging people too quickly. Austen’s style is witty and ironic, and she carefully shows the differences between appearance and reality. Many readers enjoy the sharp dialogue and the way characters gradually change their opinions of each other. Although the novel is set in the early nineteenth century, its exploration of family pressures and romantic misunderstandings still feels modern. «Pride and Prejudice» has inspired countless adaptations for film and television and continues to be studied and enjoyed around the world.
«1984» by George Orwell
«1984,» published in 1949, is a dystopian novel that imagines a future society controlled by a totalitarian government. The main character, Winston Smith, lives under constant surveillance and is forced to accept the official version of reality, even when he knows it is false. The ruling Party uses propaganda, fear, and strict control of language to keep power. Orwell introduces ideas such as «Big Brother,» who is always watching, and «Newspeak,» a simplified language designed to limit free thought. The story shows how dangerous it can be when a government has too much control over information and people’s private lives. Although «1984» was written more than seventy years ago, it is frequently mentioned in discussions about privacy, censorship, and political power. The book has had a strong influence on modern culture and remains a powerful warning about the loss of freedom.
«To Kill a Mockingbird» by Harper Lee
«To Kill a Mockingbird,» published in 1960, is set in a small town in the American South during the 1930s. The story is told by a young girl called Scout Finch, whose father, Atticus, is a lawyer. When Atticus defends a Black man wrongly accused of a crime, Scout and her brother Jem witness the racism and injustice in their community. The novel deals with serious themes such as prejudice, courage, and moral responsibility, but it also includes warm and humorous moments from Scout’s childhood. Harper Lee uses simple, clear language that makes difficult topics easier to understand. The character of Atticus Finch is often seen as a model of integrity and fairness. «To Kill a Mockingbird» has won major awards, is widely taught in schools, and continues to spark discussion about equality and human rights.
«The Great Gatsby» by F. Scott Fitzgerald
«The Great Gatsby,» published in 1925, is set in the United States during the «Roaring Twenties,» a period of economic growth and social change. The narrator, Nick Carraway, moves to Long Island and becomes fascinated by his mysterious neighbour, Jay Gatsby, who throws extravagant parties. Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan and hopes to win her back, believing that he can repeat the past. The novel looks at themes such as the American Dream, wealth, and the emptiness behind luxury. Fitzgerald’s writing style is lyrical and rich with symbolism, using images like the green light across the bay and the eyes on a billboard to suggest deeper meanings. Although «The Great Gatsby» was not a big success when it first appeared, it later became recognised as a classic. Today, it is widely studied for its portrait of ambition, illusion, and disappointment.
«Jane Eyre» by Charlotte Brontë
«Jane Eyre,» first published in 1847, is the story of an orphaned girl who struggles to find independence and love in a strict Victorian society. After a difficult childhood at a harsh school, Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the mysterious Mr Rochester. As their relationship develops, Jane discovers a dark secret hidden in the house, forcing her to make painful choices. The novel explores themes such as social class, gender roles, and moral integrity, and it presents a strong female character who insists on respecting herself and others. Brontë combines elements of romance, mystery, and social criticism, using expressive, emotional language. «Jane Eyre» has remained popular with readers and in 2003 was ranked as the tenth best-loved book by the BBC.

Hadrian’s Wall
Hadrian’s Wall stretches 117 kilometres across northern England, from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. Built by the Romans in the 2nd century CE, it marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain. The wall was not only a defensive barrier but also a controlled border, with gates, forts, and watchtowers where soldiers checked people and goods. Today, visitors can walk along long sections of the wall, explore reconstructed forts such as Housesteads and Vindolanda, and visit museums displaying Roman artefacts. The surrounding landscape, with its rolling hills and remote farms, helps visitors imagine life on the edge of an empire. Hadrian’s Wall is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular route for hikers. It shows how the Romans organised and defended their territories, and how local communities lived under Roman rule for centuries.
Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral, in the south-east of England, is one of the most important Christian sites in Britain. Founded in the 6th century, it became the headquarters of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the senior bishop of the Church of England. The cathedral is famous for its Gothic architecture, including tall arches, stained-glass windows, and intricate stone carvings. In 1170, Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered inside the cathedral, turning it into a major place of pilgrimage. Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales describes pilgrims travelling there. Today, the cathedral remains a centre of worship and tourism. It has hosted royal weddings, coronations of kings, and state funerals. Canterbury Cathedral symbolises both religious devotion and the complex relationship between church and monarchy in English history.
Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court Palace, on the outskirts of London, was originally built for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in the 1520s. When Wolsey fell from power, King Henry VIII took the palace and expanded it into a grand royal residence. The building combines Tudor brickwork with later Baroque additions, creating a striking mix of architectural styles. Visitors can walk through the State Apartments, the Great Hall, and Henry VIII’s kitchens, which give a vivid picture of court life. The palace is also famous for its maze, gardens, and the historic tennis court, one of the oldest in the world. Hampton Court has been home to several monarchs and has witnessed dramatic events, including the birth of Edward VI and the imprisonment of courtiers. Today, it is open to the public and offers a glimpse into the luxury, politics, and scandals of the Tudor and Stuart courts.
York Minster
York Minster, located in the city of York in northern England, is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. Construction began in the 13th century and continued for over 250 years, resulting in a building full of pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and elaborate stone decorations. The cathedral’s stained-glass windows, especially the Great East Window, are among the finest in the world. York Minster has survived fires, storms, and even a lightning strike, each time being carefully restored. It has been the site of royal weddings, christenings, and important church ceremonies. Climbing the central tower offers panoramic views over the medieval city and its narrow streets. The Minster is not only a place of worship but also a repository of art, music, and history. It reflects the wealth and ambition of medieval York and continues to play a central role in the life of the city.
Greenwich and the Royal Observatory
Greenwich, in south-east London, is famous for its maritime history and the Royal Observatory. Founded in 1675 by King Charles II, the observatory was created to improve navigation by studying the stars and developing accurate timekeeping. The Prime Meridian, the line of 0° longitude, passes through the observatory, dividing the Earth into eastern and western hemispheres. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), based on this meridian, became the world’s standard for time. Visitors can stand on the Prime Meridian line, explore historic telescopes, and learn about famous astronomers such as John Flamsteed and Edmond Halley. The area also includes the Cutty Sark, a preserved 19th-century tea clipper, and the National Maritime Museum. Greenwich shows how Britain’s naval power, science, and trade were connected, and why this small part of London became a global reference point for time and navigation.

Ada Lovelace
Ada Lovelace, born Augusta Ada Byron in London in 1815, is often described as the first computer programmer. The daughter of the poet Lord Byron, she had a strong interest in mathematics and science from an early age. In the 1830s, Ada met Charles Babbage and became fascinated by his plans for the Analytical Engine, a mechanical calculating machine. Babbage asked her to translate a scientific article about the engine from French into English. While doing this, she added her own detailed notes, which were actually longer than the original article. In these notes, she explained how the machine could be programmed to perform different tasks and even suggested that it might one day be used to work with symbols, such as musical notes, not just numbers. She also wrote a step-by-step description of how the Analytical Engine could calculate a complex mathematical sequence, which many historians now regard as the first computer program. Although the machine was never built in her lifetime, Ada Lovelace’s ideas showed a remarkable understanding of the potential of computing long before electronic computers existed.
James Dyson
James Dyson, born in 1947 in Norfolk, is a British inventor and entrepreneur best known for transforming everyday household technology. After studying design in London, he became interested in combining engineering with industrial design to solve practical problems. In the 1970s, Dyson worked on various projects, including a new type of boat called the Sea Truck, before turning his attention to vacuum cleaners. He was frustrated that traditional vacuum cleaners quickly lost suction because their bags became blocked with dust. Inspired by large industrial machines that removed particles using cyclones, he spent years building and testing thousands of prototypes of a bagless vacuum cleaner. The final design used centrifugal force to separate dust from the air, keeping suction strong. Despite many rejections from established companies, Dyson eventually launched his own products, which became extremely successful. He has since developed bladeless fans, hand dryers, and other devices, and set up the James Dyson Foundation to encourage young people to study engineering.
Rosalind Franklin
Rosalind Franklin, born in London in 1920, was a British scientist whose work was crucial to understanding the structure of DNA. After studying chemistry at Cambridge, she became an expert in X-ray crystallography, a technique used to study the arrangement of atoms in crystals. In the early 1950s, Franklin worked at King’s College London, taking detailed X-ray photographs of DNA fibres. One of these images, known as Photo 51, showed a clear pattern that suggested DNA had a spiral structure. Her measurements helped other researchers, including James Watson and Francis Crick, to build their famous model of DNA. Although she did not receive the same level of recognition during her lifetime, historians now see Franklin as a central figure in the discovery of DNA’s structure and in the development of molecular biology. She later studied viruses at Birkbeck College before her early death from cancer in 1958.
Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage, born in London in 1791, was a mathematician, engineer, and inventor who is often called a «father of the computer.» In the nineteenth century, calculations for science, navigation, and finance were usually done by hand and were often full of errors. Babbage wanted to design machines that could carry out complex calculations automatically and accurately. His first major project, the Difference Engine, was intended to produce mathematical tables without human mistakes. Later, he developed plans for the Analytical Engine, a much more advanced machine that could be programmed to perform a variety of operations. This design included features similar to those of modern computers, such as a memory unit and a processor. Unfortunately, the technology of his time and a lack of consistent funding meant that his machines were never fully completed. However, his ideas influenced later computer pioneers, and working models built in the twentieth century showed that his designs were sound. Today, Babbage is remembered as a visionary who imagined programmable computing long before it became reality.
Frank Whittle
Frank Whittle, born in Coventry in 1907, was a British aviation engineer and pilot who played a key role in inventing the jet engine. The son of a mechanic, he developed an early interest in machinery and aircraft. As a teenager he joined the Royal Air Force and trained both as an aircraft fitter and later as a pilot. While studying at the RAF College at Cranwell, Whittle wrote a thesis in which he imagined future aircraft flying much faster and higher than existing planes. He realised that traditional engines would not be suitable for such speeds and began to consider using gas turbines to produce jet propulsion. In 1930, he patented a design for a turbojet engine, but at first his idea was seen as impractical and received little official support. Eventually, money was found and a company called Power Jets Limited was created to develop his engines. In 1941, Britain’s first jet aircraft, the Gloster E.28/39, made its maiden flight using a Whittle engine, proving that his concept worked. Although other countries later developed their own jet engines, Whittle’s work helped launch the jet age and revolutionised both military and commercial aviation.

The production of KAMAZ trucks has been a cornerstone of Russia’s transport industry for decades. The brand is so familiar that many people use «KAMAZ» as a general term for heavy-duty trucks. On 16 February 1976, the first KAMAZ truck left the assembly line at the Kama Automobile Plant. It quickly became the most widely used diesel truck in the Soviet Union and later turned into one of the country’s most iconic vehicles.
During the late 1960s, the Soviet Union experienced rapid industrial growth and large-scale construction. As new factories, roads and housing projects appeared, the demand for modern heavy trucks rose sharply. The country needed vehicles capable of carrying heavier loads while using less fuel. In response, the Soviet government decided to invest in a brand-new manufacturing plant.
The Kama Automobile Plant was built in Naberezhnye Chelny, on the banks of the Kama River in the Republic of Tatarstan. The city expanded rapidly to support the factory, and thousands of people moved there to work for KAMAZ. In 1979, the city introduced «KAMAZ Day», which soon became its most important local celebration.
The project was developed with assistance from several international companies, and the truck’s design was based on earlier engineering work carried out at the Moscow ZIL plant. The factory soon reached full production capacity, manufacturing hundreds of trucks every day. As the company grew, it introduced various new models, including all-wheel-drive versions designed for more difficult operating conditions.
Nowadays, KAMAZ produces a wide range of vehicles, such as dump trucks, flatbed lorries, tractor units and many specialised models. The company’s distinctive logo, featuring a galloping horse, can be seen on fuel tankers, fire engines, mobile cranes, military vehicles and other types of transport. KAMAZ vehicles are widely used to clear snow from roads, support agricultural work, carry construction materials and provide public transport through buses and electric buses.
In 1993, the factory suffered a devastating fire, and the economic difficulties of that period made recovery even harder. Nevertheless, the company managed to overcome these challenges and gradually rebuilt its production. By 2024, KAMAZ had celebrated the manufacture of its 2.5 millionth vehicle, underlining its continued importance to the Russian car-building industry.
Another remarkable aspect of the company’s history is its involvement in international motorsport. In the late 1980s, KAMAZ established its own racing team, KAMAZ-Master. During the early 1990s, the team began competing in the prestigious Dakar Rally. Since then, it has achieved outstanding success, winning the event numerous times and becoming one of the most successful truck racing teams in the world.
In February 2026, KAMAZ celebrated its 50th anniversary. Today, its vehicles can be found not only throughout Russia and other former Soviet republics but also in many countries around the world, where they have been exported for decades. Thanks to its long history, continuous development and international achievements, KAMAZ remains one of the best-known manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles.

Today, many people in Moscow simply say «Sklif» when referring to the Sklifosovsky Institute for Emergency Medicine, one of Russia’s leading hospitals for emergency treatment. It specialises in life-saving care, including emergency surgery, treatment for burns and poisoning, and intensive care. Although the institute was founded more than twenty years after Nikolai Sklifosovsky’s death, it bears his name because of his outstanding contribution to emergency medicine and surgery.
Nikolai Sklifosovsky was born on 6 April 1836 in Kherson Province. He was the ninth of twelve children in a poor noble family. After his mother died, his father sent him and his younger siblings to an orphanage in Odessa. Despite these difficulties, he graduated from secondary school with a silver medal and entered the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1855.
During his studies, Sklifosovsky trained under the famous surgeon Fyodor Inozemtsev. Interestingly, he fainted the first time he saw blood during an operation. However, he soon overcame this fear and became one of the greatest surgeons of his time. After graduating, he completed his doctoral studies and gained valuable experience by working in several European wars.
Sklifosovsky took part in four major military campaigns between 1866 and 1878. This experience changed his approach to surgery. He believed that wounded soldiers should be taken to field hospitals as quickly as possible to receive professional treatment. Moreover, he opposed the common practice of immediate amputation. Instead, he developed new surgical methods that allowed doctors to save damaged limbs. One of his most important achievements was the «Sklifosovsky lock», a technique for joining broken bones that is still used in a modified form today.
He also transformed hospital hygiene. In the nineteenth century, many patients died after surgery because of infections. Sklifosovsky introduced strict rules requiring medical staff to wash and disinfect their hands, wear clean gowns, and sterilise instruments by boiling or steaming them. Although some colleagues laughed at these measures, they soon proved successful, as the number of deaths after surgery fell significantly.
In addition, Sklifosovsky became one of the pioneers of abdominal surgery in Russia. He performed some of the country’s earliest stomach operations and developed treatments for many diseases. At the same time, he promoted the use of general and local anaesthesia, making operations much safer and less painful.
Besides his work as a surgeon, Sklifosovsky was an excellent teacher and organiser. As Dean of the Medical Faculty at Moscow University, he helped create a modern clinical campus. Later, while leading the Imperial Clinical Institute in St. Petersburg, he introduced advanced equipment, including one of Russia’s first X-ray rooms. He also supported higher medical education for women and encouraged female doctors to work alongside men during the Russo-Turkish War.
Sklifosovsky published around one hundred scientific papers and became an honorary member of several European medical societies. His work transformed surgery into a more scientific discipline, while his ideas continue to influence modern medicine. Although the famous institute named after him opened only after his death, his legacy lives on through the countless lives saved by his innovations.

Ivan Aivazovsky is celebrated as one of the greatest marine painters in Russian art history. Born in 1817 in the port town of Feodosia on the Black Sea, he grew up in an Armenian family of modest means and showed artistic talent from an early age. His first professional lessons in drawing came from a local architect, who helped the boy develop both his confidence and his technical skills. In 1833, he moved to Saint Petersburg to study at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he trained under experienced landscape and marine painters and quickly attracted attention for his ability to depict water and light.
Like many artists of his time, Aivazovsky travelled widely across Europe after completing his studies. He spent several years in Italy, visited France, England, the Netherlands and the Ottoman Empire, and exhibited his works in major cities such as Paris and Amsterdam. His seascapes, which combined accurate observation with romantic drama, were warmly received by critics and the public. In 1845, he settled permanently in his native Feodosia, but his reputation continued to grow both in Russia and abroad.
Aivazovsky’s paintings are best known for their powerful atmosphere and sense of movement. In famous works such as «The Ninth Wave» and «Black Sea,» enormous waves crash against fragile ships, while the sky glows with sunrise or moonlight. He was particularly interested in the emotional effect of the sea and often used strong contrasts between light and darkness to create a feeling of hope in the midst of danger. Many viewers have noted that his paintings seem almost musical, as if the rhythm of the waves could be heard through the brushstrokes.
Although he is mainly remembered for his seascapes, Aivazovsky’s career was very diverse. He worked closely with the Imperial Russian Navy, recording naval manoeuvres and battles, including scenes from the Crimean War. He also painted landscapes of Crimea and Ukraine, views of foreign ports, and genre scenes showing everyday life near the sea. Over his lifetime, he produced around 6,000 paintings, an astonishing number that reflects his energy and discipline. He was honoured with many awards, including membership in several European academies.
Despite his international success, Aivazovsky remained strongly connected to his hometown. In Feodosia he built a house, a large studio, and even helped to develop the local port. He supported cultural initiatives, donated artworks, and acted as a patron of younger artists. For him, art was not only a profession but also a service to his country and region. Aivazovsky died in Feodosia in 1900, leaving behind a rich legacy. Today, his paintings are held in major museums, including the Aivazovsky National Art Gallery, the State Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery, and continue to inspire artists who try to capture the essence of the sea.
